Are You Protecting Your Energy? Here's Why I Think You Should

There's something about this time of year that gets people talking about energy, intuition, and the things we can't always explain.

Maybe it's Halloween coming up, the changing seasons, or simply the fact that we're spending more time indoors and around other people. Whatever it is, I've been thinking about something that comes up quite often in my work.

How many of us actually take the time to protect our energy?

And I don't just mean when we're doing spiritual work, visiting a psychic, or exploring something on a deeper energetic level. I'm talking about everyday situations, too.

Think about the last time you walked into a crowded room and immediately felt overwhelmed. Or spent time with someone who was having a difficult day, only to leave the conversation feeling exhausted yourself.

Sometimes we're so caught up in what's happening around us that we forget to check in with what's happening within us.

For those of us who are particularly sensitive to other people's emotions and our surroundings, I think this is especially important.

Something I Often Encourage People to Practice

When I talk about protecting your energy, I'm not suggesting that you need to shut yourself off from the world or avoid situations that might feel uncomfortable.

What I encourage is learning to become more aware of yourself and creating a little space between your own experience and everything happening around you.

I like to think of it as giving yourself a moment to come back to yourself before stepping into someone else's space.

In my own approach to energy work, there are three things I encourage people to do: ground, clear, and shield.

You don't need any special equipment, and you certainly don't need to be an expert. Just a few quiet moments and a willingness to try.

First, Get Grounded

I always recommend starting with grounding.

Find a comfortable position, take a few slow breaths, and imagine roots extending from your feet deep into the earth. Another visualization you can try is a grounding cord extending from the base of your spine down into the ground.

Take your time with it.

Notice how your body feels. Are your shoulders tense? Is your mind racing? Have you been carrying something from earlier in the day that you haven't really had time to process?

The goal is simply to feel a little more connected to yourself and the present moment.

Sometimes we move so quickly from one conversation, responsibility, or environment to the next that we don't realize how much we're carrying until we finally stop.

Next, Give Yourself a White Light Shower

This is one of the visualizations I like to recommend.

Imagine a beautiful white light pouring down over you, almost like you're standing underneath a warm shower.

Picture it moving from the top of your head, over your shoulders, and all the way down your body. You can even imagine it moving through your body, washing away anything that feels heavy or that you're ready to let go of.

Maybe you've been dealing with a stressful situation at work. Maybe someone shared something difficult with you, and you've been thinking about it ever since.

Or perhaps you just feel a little off and can't quite put your finger on why.

You don't always need to have an explanation for how you're feeling before giving yourself permission to pause.

I think that's something many of us forget.

Now, Put Your Shield Up

Here's where you get to be a little creative.

Once you've grounded and cleared, imagine a protective bubble forming around your entire body.

It can be made of whatever material you like. Maybe you picture a soft bubble of light, a reflective surface, or something stronger and more solid.

In energy work, we use these different visualizations to represent what we want to allow into our personal space and what we'd rather keep out.

If you're someone who feels particularly sensitive to the energy of others, you might imagine a stronger boundary.

I often think about how easy it is to become so focused on what other people need that we forget we're allowed to have boundaries, too.

You can care deeply about someone without carrying everything they're going through.

And you can be present for others without making yourself available to every emotion, expectation, or demand that comes your way.

That's something worth remembering, whether or not you consider yourself a spiritual person.

You Don't Have to Wait Until You're Overwhelmed

One thing I'd really encourage you to try this fall is making this practice part of your everyday routine.

Before you leave the house in the morning, take a moment to ground yourself.

Before a difficult conversation, imagine that white light clearing away the stress you've been holding.

And before entering a busy environment, picture your protective bubble.

Ground. Clear. Shield.

You might even find it helpful to repeat the practice at the end of the day, especially if you've spent a lot of time around other people.

These visualizations are part of my spiritual approach to energy work, and they can also serve as a simple reminder to slow down, notice how you're feeling, and be intentional about your boundaries.

As we move further into fall and toward the busier holiday season, I think that's something we could all benefit from.

So here's something I'd love for you to consider.

How often do you check in with yourself before giving your time, attention, and energy to everyone else?

And what might change if you made that a regular part of your day?

You don't have to wait until you're completely drained to give yourself a little care.

If you're particularly sensitive to your surroundings or curious about exploring grounding and energetic protection further, I'd love to help you find practices that feel right for you.

Let's connect.

With love,

Michelle
